RAM, or as the text books say, Random Access Memory, is what’s accountable for your computer’s high speed data fetching, storing and processing. Didn’t quite follow? Let’s just say that a RAM copies the permanently stored information from your hard disk to it’s own memory when you want to process or even just open that particular information. Once you’re done using the data, or if you just switch off the system, the data stored on the RAM gets erased. In a nutshell, a RAM keeps your loaded files ready for use until you want it to, and offers a faster processing speed to save your time. The greater the RAM capacity, the more tasks can you do simultaneously. This would inevitably improve the fluidity in multi-tasking or even handling large sized files. Before you confuse RAM with other storage devices like hard disks, it’s important to note that in most cases, a RAM is not a permanent storage device, i.e, the data stored in a RAM gets deleted once the power goes off. The only exception to this flaw is the non-volatile RAM or NVRAMs, which can retain the stored data even if the computer is turned off. Although, NVRAMs are much more expensive than normal RAMs and are also significantly slower- defying the main reason to buy random access memory- speed.

Are you stuck between need and desire? Let’s find out. You might be in the need of a 4GB  RAM for mediocre use, but might also get intrigued by a 8GB stick, just for the sake of more power. Should you stick to your need or go a step beyond and give in to your desire? Well, buying a little extra space would be the better option here. Why you ask? Simply because the size of the applications are only going to increase in the future. If you want to future-proof your system for another few years, getting some extra space would be a wise decision.
